OneCoast is committed to Zero Waste and Waste Minimisation and works within community education principles. This means that the more you volunteer, the more you learn and the more you help others in the community learn too. You don't need to be an expert in zero waste or waste minimisation, you just need to care about making a difference.
Here, volunteers can get involved in many different ways. OneCoast works with the Dunedin City Council and Waste Management to keep usable goods and other waste from heading to landfill. From green waste, donation sorting, sales of second hand furniture to building infrastructure, there are multiple ways to get involved.
Because these roles are on DCC owned land, a vaccine pass and police check is required before volunteering.
Time requirement: Weekly or fortnightly for donation sorting and sales. Casual or as needed for green waste and building infrastructure.
At times throughout the year, OneCoast gets involved with events, or hosts a community education event. At other various times, there are working bees that mainly involve planting to create a better space or improve methods of green waste return. Both of these types of roles are casual and support and friendship is a big part of how we work together!
Depending on requirements of location or event, a vaccine pass may be required. Event roles will require a police check.
Time requirement: Casual, often 3-4 times a year. Volunteers aren't expected to turn up to every working bee or event, but a minimum of 2 would be appreciated.
Our office, located at the East Otago Event Centre in Waikouaiti, is where we are available to the community to answer any questions about OneCoast, how to volunteer with us and the sale of small items. All training will be given and its a great way to have meaningful conversations with the public about zero waste and waste minimisation.
Because this role is on DCC owned land, vaccine pass and police check is required before volunteering.
Time requirement: Weekly or fortnightly at a fixed time during the week.
We're especially keen to hear from members of our community about their own initiatives and ways that they can support Zero Waste and Waste Minimisation. If you've got an idea - we can support. After all, we're here to make things happen!
You're interested in volunteering with us - great! We're a friendly, practical, down-to-earth bunch. You'll love it!
First, we need you to fill out a registration of interest form. This form has all the practical information like your contact information in it, but also some health and safety questions so that if we can make sure you're safe .
Once we have this information, we'll give you a call or we can meet you face to face. We'll go through the next steps like what you are interested in, your skills you'd like to contribute and our confidentiality and volunteer agreement. If you need to do a police check, we'll get this sorted and we will need to sight some ID. For roles requiring a police check, we will need to wait until we have received this back before you start volunteering. This usually takes around 2-3 weeks.
Once we've got all the paperwork back, we'll do orientation, training and any other special information that you may need to keep you safe while volunteering with us. It may sound like a lot of work to do but it'll pass by in a whizz.
Feel free to get in touch with us about anything. We're always happy to help.
